South Africa's Woolworths hit by explosive devices amid attacks on shops

JOHANNESBURG, May 29 (Xinhua) -- South African retail giant Woolworths confirmed on Friday that improvised explosive devices had detonated at two of its stores, causing extensive damage.

According to a company statement, the first device exploded at the Menlyn Park store in Pretoria on Thursday, followed by a second blast at the Preller Square branch in Bloemfontein on Friday.

Woolworths said no injuries were reported in either incident, noting that both explosions occurred during the early hours of the morning when the stores were closed.

The Pretoria store has since reopened, while the Bloemfontein branch remains closed pending an ongoing investigation.

Group Chief Executive Officer Sam Ngumeni said police were immediately notified following both incidents and had combed the scenes to ensure no further threats remained.

The incidents come amid targeted attacks and looting involving foreign-owned shops in the country. The government and law enforcement agencies have warned perpetrators that those found breaking the law will face the full force of justice. Enditem
