LA PAZ, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Ernesto Justiniano was named on Wednesday as Bolivia's new defense minister amid ongoing unrest in the country.

He took office in the presence of Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz Pereira, who said Justiniano's work will focus on restoring stability, supporting the armed forces and defending democratic order.

The appointment comes as protests and blockades continue to disrupt the country. Local media reported that the unrest has lasted more than 30 days, with more than 100 blockade points still active nationwide, affecting cargo transport, public mobility and adding pressure on the economy.

Justiniano said Bolivia is facing an exceptional situation and must restore basic conditions for the state to function.

He said that the government will keep dialogue channels open and that no demand can justify paralyzing the country or putting public safety at risk. Enditem
