GAZA, June 4 (Xinhua) -- At least nine Palestinians were killed and several others injured early Thursday in a series of Israeli airstrikes that targeted residential areas in Gaza City, according to medical sources and eyewitnesses.
Medical sources at the Gaza City-based Al-Shifa medical complex told Xinhua that at least nine people were killed, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries. Rescue teams continued search operations for missing persons under the rubble.
Eyewitnesses said Israeli warplanes carried out strikes on multiple locations across Gaza City, targeting apartments and residential buildings in northern and western neighborhoods.
Gaza Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal said rescue teams had been operating since the early hours of Thursday across multiple sites struck simultaneously in Gaza City, adding that teams had recovered several bodies and injured persons from under the rubble, while others remain missing.
Basal told Xinhua that search and rescue efforts are facing major difficulties due to widespread destruction, a severe shortage of heavy equipment needed to remove debris, and fuel shortages affecting field operations.
In a related development, local sources said the Israeli army continued demolishing buildings and facilities in northern and southern Gaza Strip.
In Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, at least 10 demolition operations targeting buildings and facilities were carried out in eastern parts of the city, coinciding with artillery shelling and gunfire in the area, the sources said.
Eyewitnesses also reported two demolition operations in eastern neighborhoods of Gaza City.
The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the reports. Enditem
