LOS ANGELES, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Five astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) ended safe-haven procedures on Friday after Russia's state space corporation Roscosmos paused repair work on a leak-prone section of the ISS' Russian segment, according to NASA.
NASA's press secretary Bethany Stevens wrote on X that structural repair efforts inside the transfer tunnel of the Russian Zvezda service module, known as PrK, were suspended as more measurements and data were assessed.
The PrK transfer tunnel has experienced cracks and leaks for some time, Stevens said. "NASA and Roscosmos have been working to determine the root cause of the cracks, and Roscosmos manages the issue through operational mitigation measures and periodic partial-repair efforts."
Following reports of new leaks, Roscosmos had planned a more extensive repair operation on Friday. Out of an abundance of caution, NASA directed four members of the agency's SpaceX Crew-12 mission and NASA astronaut Chris Williams to assume an "elevated safety posture" in the Dragon spacecraft while the repair was underway, she said.
After Roscosmos paused the repair operation, NASA instructed the crew members to end the safe-haven procedures and return to planned operations aboard the orbiting laboratory.
The five astronauts included NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, who make up the Crew-12 mission, and NASA's Williams, who arrived at the station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
Stevens said NASA will work with Roscosmos on a collaborative approach to address the leaks. Enditem
