BEIRUT, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon on Saturday launched the redevelopment of Rene Mouawad Airport in northern Akkar region's Qlayaat, with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam arriving aboard the first aircraft to land at the facility, Lebanon's National News Agency reported.

During the launching ceremony, Salam said the project aims to end Akkar's decades of deprivation, noting that the region has Lebanon's highest poverty rate at 62 percent, compared to a national average of 33 percent.

The civilian airport will complement Beirut's international airport, he noted, adding that flights from Qlayaat are expected to begin in the near future.

Meanwhile, Public Works and Transport Minister Fayez Rasamny said at the ceremony that the ministry is in contact with low-cost airlines to expand future routes. Enditem
