JERUSALEM, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Israel is at "maximum preparedness" for possible retaliation from Iran after Israeli airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs earlier in the day, Israeli state-owned broadcaster Kan reported Sunday.
The security establishment is boosting its readiness for a possible Iranian response following the airstrikes, Kan reported, citing an Israeli official.
However, Israel's Home Front Command said in a statement that defensive guidelines for civilians remain unchanged, adding that the decision followed a situational assessment.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military said the airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs, targeting a Hezbollah command center, were in response to two rockets fired from Lebanon earlier in the day.
According to Lebanon's National News Agency, at least two people were killed and 11 others injured in the Israeli airstrikes.
On Sunday evening, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf vowed to "halt the negotiation process" and "engage in direct confrontation with the enemy" if Israeli attacks against Lebanon continue.
U.S. naval blockade and its "green light today" to Israel regarding Lebanon turn U.S. and Israeli "bases and assets in the region into legitimate targets," Ghalibaf, also Iran's top negotiator, wrote on social media platform X.
Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesman for the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, also vowed on X to give "a decisive and painful response" to Israeli attack on Beirut's southern suburbs. "Look at the sky of the occupied territories tonight," he wrote.
The developments came days after Israel and Lebanon agreed to implement a ceasefire following trilateral negotiations in Washington. Enditem
