BERLIN, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Cologne has completed the permanent signing of English center-back Jahmai Simpson-Pusey from Manchester City, handing the 20-year-old a contract until 2030 after his loan spell, the Bundesliga club announced on Friday.
Simpson-Pusey joined Cologne in January on loan from City, having spent the first half of the season at Celtic. He established himself in Cologne after a full debut in a 2-2 draw at Heidenheim.
The defender made 11 appearances for the club in the second half of the season, with his progress interrupted only by injury and a suspension following a red card.
Cologne sporting director Thomas Kessler said the club was convinced by both the player's adaptation and his longer-term potential. "Jahmai settled in very quickly after his move in the winter and accepted the challenge at this level straight away," Kessler said. "With his performances, he showed the potential he has."
"That makes us all the more pleased that we have now been able to tie him to Cologne for the long term. His development is another example that Cologne offers a very good environment for young, talented players to take the next step in their careers."
Simpson-Pusey, who spent 12 years in Manchester City's academy, made his professional debut for the Premier League club in 2024 and played six senior matches under Pep Guardiola.
He said regular football and the backing he received in Cologne were decisive in his wish to stay. "I got a lot of playing time here and the club placed a lot of trust in me," Simpson-Pusey said. "I am grateful for that and that is why I wanted to stay in Cologne. The playing time, the fans, the club, it all feels very good for me."
Simpson-Pusey's permanent arrival underlines Cologne's plan to add stability after it finished 14th in the 2025-26 Bundesliga season. Enditem
