DAMASCUS, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Syrian authorities said Monday that security forces foiled an Islamic State group attack targeting an Internal Security command headquarters in the northern city of Raqqa, leaving one security member dead and three others wounded.

In a statement, the Syrian interior authorities said two suicide attackers affiliated with the Islamic State group attempted to carry out a "terrorist attack" against one of the Internal Security leadership headquarters in Raqqa.

The authorities said security forces confronted the attackers "with high vigilance" and managed to neutralize one of them during clashes, while the second detonated an explosive vest after being surrounded by security personnel.

The explosion killed one member of the Internal Security forces and wounded three others, who were transferred to hospitals for treatment.

Earlier preliminary statements from the interior authorities had reported two fatalities before officials later updated the casualty toll.

No civilian casualties were immediately reported.

The attack comes as Syrian authorities continue security operations against suspected Islamic State sleeper cells in several parts of the country following the political transition that followed the collapse of former President Bashar Assad's government in December 2024.

Raqqa, once the de facto capital of the Islamic State group in Syria, has remained vulnerable to insurgent attacks despite years of military operations against extremist organizations.

Syrian authorities have repeatedly warned that militant groups are attempting to exploit security gaps and instability during the country's transitional period. Enditem
