NEW YORK, June 17 (Xinhua) -- A business jet crashed on a highway and caught fire in the U.S. state of Texas on Tuesday night, killing one person on board, according to authorities.
The jet was carrying six people when it crashed on the Loop 20 highway in Laredo, near the Mexican border, shortly after 10 p.m. local time, said Jose Baeza, an investigator with the Laredo Police Department.
The jet barreled into a car, sending one motorist to hospital in stable condition, police said. At least five officers responding to the accident were also transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
The jet crashed after attempting an emergency landing, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.
In a post on X, the FAA said that the plane involved in the incident was a Cessna Citation Latitude jet that departed Tuesday evening from the Mexican resort city of San Jose del Cabo and was bound for Austin, Texas.
Laredo International Airport authorities said that the plane experienced mechanical problems.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash. Enditem
