QUITO, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on Wednesday voiced his willingness to restore diplomatic relations with Mexico.

"Personally, I would like to restore relations with the Mexican government. We have many Mexican companies investing in Ecuador, and there is no reason for us to have a fight or to have suspended diplomatic relations at this time," Noboa said in an interview with TV Azteca.

The two countries severed their relations in April 2024 after Ecuadorian police entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, who was seeking asylum.

Mexico granted political asylum to Glas, who had been convicted of corruption, though he denied the charges and claimed political persecution.

Ecuador rejected Mexico's decision to grant asylum, and the incident escalated into an embassy breach that shocked the international community and triggered a diplomatic crisis.

The case is currently before the International Court of Justice following a lawsuit filed by Mexico and a counterclaim from Ecuador. Enditem
