KABUL, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Ministry of Mines and Petroleum has signed a contract for the development of an iron ore mine in central Bamiyan province, the official media Bakhtar News Agency reported on Saturday.

According to the report, the project in Yakawlang district covers a mining area of 85 square kilometers with a total investment of 438.96 million Afghanis (nearly 7 million U.S. dollars). Under the agreement, the mining operation will be carried out in accordance with Afghanistan's mining laws, regulations and contractual commitments.

Authorities said all extracted iron ore will be processed inside Afghanistan, a move aimed at promoting domestic industrial development, creating employment opportunities and increasing the value of the country's mineral resources.

The government has been seeking to attract investment in the mining sector as part of efforts to boost economic growth, strengthen domestic industries and generate jobs. Enditem
