LAUSANNE, Switzerland, June 24 (Xinhua) -- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday approved reforms to its host selection process and said the host of the 2036 Summer Olympics will be chosen in mid-2029.
Under the new framework, interested parties will enter a "Strategic Dialogue" phase beginning in March 2027, before progressing through several evaluation stages.
Potential hosts will be required to complete a Future Host Questionnaire and submit key financial guarantees before advancing to the final stage, known as Targeted Dialogue, the IOC said.
The reforms also create a new Strategic Dialogue phase, allowing the IOC Executive Board to shortlist a number of projects that align with the organization's long-term priorities for more detailed assessment.
The IOC said the changes will increase collaboration with potential hosts at an earlier stage and give IOC members a greater role in the process.
The reforms were first approved by the IOC Executive Board in June and form part of the "Fit for the Future" agenda launched by IOC President Kirsty Coventry after she took office in 2025.
"Choosing an Olympic host is a powerful and influential decision, which comes with great responsibility. It is therefore important that we make the right choice, through careful and thorough reflection," said Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, who chairs the IOC's Future Host Commission for the Games.
"These reforms will give potential hosts greater clarity, and their governments will have a clear timetable to provide the requested support," she added.
The next two Summer Olympics are already assigned, with the 2028 Games set to be held in Los Angeles and the 2032 edition in Brisbane, leaving the 2036 edition as the next available Summer Games to be awarded. Enditem
