KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's services trade posted a surplus of 5.3 billion ringgit (1.29 billion U.S. dollars) in 2025, reversing years of deficits and marking the country's first trade surplus in the sector since 2011, official data showed on Thursday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that total trade in services grew 11.5 percent year-on-year to 550.5 billion ringgit in 2025, equivalent to 27.2 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) at current prices.

Services exports rose 15.6 percent to 277.9 billion ringgit from 240.5 billion ringgit in 2024, driven by stronger receipts from travel, telecommunications, computer and information services, as well as other business services.

Services imports increased at a slower pace of 7.7 percent to 272.6 billion ringgit, compared with 253.1 billion ringgit a year earlier. Growth was mainly supported by higher spending on travel, other business services, and telecommunications, computer and information services.

As a result, Malaysia's services trade balance swung from a deficit of 12.6 billion ringgit in 2024 to a surplus of 5.3 billion ringgit in 2025, reflecting stronger growth in exports than imports. (1 ringgit equals 0.24 U.S. dollar) Enditem
