DHAKA -- The World Bank's board of executive directors has approved 250 million U.S. dollars in financing to help Bangladesh modernize five key government agencies, aiming to improve transparency, accountability and efficiency in public sector operations.

The Washington-based lender, in a statement released on Sunday, said the Strengthening Institutions for Transparency and Accountability (SITA) project approved on June 12 takes a comprehensive approach to strengthening government institutions for improving data production, domestic revenue mobilization, public investment management, procurement and audit. SUVA -- Over the past decade, Fiji's public debt has nearly tripled, rising from approximately 4 billion Fijian dollars (about 1.77 billion U.S. dollars) in 2016 to nearly 12 billion Fijian dollars (some 5.31 billion USD), according to Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development Esrom Immanuel.

MANILA -- Around 3,500 protesters marched in the Philippine capital, Manila, on Sunday, demanding accountability for alleged corruption in government projects, particularly flood-control contracts, according to local media reports.

HANOI -- Vietnam on Sunday dispatched a team of 82 military personnel from various units, including the border guard and military medical forces, to Venezuela to assist in search-and-rescue operations following a recent deadly earthquake, local daily VnExpress reported.
