BERLIN, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A shooting incident in the northern German city of Stade on Monday has left six people dead, according to German media reports.

A police spokesperson said two suspects have been arrested. The shooting occurred in downtown Stade, in the state of Lower Saxony. Initially, authorities confirmed that five people had died, four at the scene and a fifth despite receiving first aid. A sixth victim later died in hospital, bringing the death toll to six.

According to German magazine Der Spiegel, the two suspects are a man and a woman, both over the age of 21. The number of people injured remains unclear.

German news outlet FOCUS reported that witnesses saw the man and woman attempting to flee by car. Police pursued the vehicle and reportedly opened fire in an effort to stop the suspects.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Police said there is currently no ongoing threat to residents or the wider public. Enditem
