Iraq, Syria agree to form joint committees to boost ties, cooperation

BAGHDAD, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with Syrian foreign affairs chief Asaad Hassan al-Shibani in Damascus on Monday to discuss boosting bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across a range of sectors, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said.

During the meeting, the two sides agreed to form a specialized joint committee covering energy, agriculture, water, transport, and border ports to advance cooperation and enhance mutual interests, read a ministry statement.

They also agreed to establish a high-level joint coordination committee to oversee the implementation of bilateral cooperation outcomes and coordinate efforts across multiple fields, read the statement.

The meeting addressed mechanisms for transporting and transiting energy supplies, the project to rehabilitate oil pipelines from Iraq to Syria, and cooperation in the water and agriculture sectors, read the statement.
