BARCELONA, Spain, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The World Congress of Architects in Barcelona is bringing together global architects to explore ecological transition and climate-resilient urban development.
The five-day event has attracted around 10,000 participants from more than 130 countries. Designated by UNESCO as the World Capital of Architecture 2026, Barcelona is the first city to host the congress for a second time -- 30 years after its 1996 edition.
Held every three years since 1948 by the International Union of Architects (UIA), the congress this year focuses on urban regeneration, social inclusion, the integration of rural and urban areas, ecological transition and climate resilience.
"The title of this congress, 'Becoming. Architectures for a Planet in Transition,' already tells us that we are talking about a planetary scale. We are not only talking about our street, our city or our country, but about the planet," Maria Girame, commissioner of the World Congress of Architects 2026, told Xinhua.
The congress provides a platform for architecture professionals to exchange ideas and showcase innovations in design, sustainable construction, digital technologies and urban policy.
"It brings you up to date with the tools and technology that allow you to carry out your profession responsibly, and it reminds you that we are here to design the cities of the future and create public spaces that citizens deserve," Roxana Lopez, an architect from Mexico, told Xinhua.
The congress provides "a real opportunity to meet other architects" and learn from projects around the world that could inspire future designs, said architect Ada Yaya Bocoom from Burkina Faso.
Professor Heiner Lippe, an architect from Germany and a member of the Architects' Council of Europe, said Barcelona offers "a very good example" of how cities can address the challenges of sustainable urban renewal.
From June 28 to July 2, participants are attending keynote speeches, panel discussions, exhibitions and seminars covering sustainable architecture, digital innovation and socially inclusive urban design. Enditem
