KABUL, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Police have seized over one ton of different kind of illegal drugs in Takhar province in northern Afghanistan over the past three months, provincial police spokesman Nizamudin Omir said Wednesday.
The narcotics, which included 590 kg poppy, 202 kg hashish, 205 kg methamphetamine, several kg heroin and 149 kg other illegal objects used in manufacturing drugs, have been discovered during a series of operations across the province, the official said.
Police have also arrested 85 individuals on charge of involvement in producing and trafficking narcotics, he added.
More than 4,300 acres of poppy farms have been destroyed during the period, he claimed, saying police have also rounded up 132 drug addicted people over the past three months and sent them to rehabilitation center in neighboring Kunduz province.
Police will not allow anyone to cultivate poppy, process to drug or traffic it, he said. Enditem
