ST. PETERSBURG, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Russia is fully prepared for the wide-scale use of the digital ruble starting Sept. 1, Russian Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina said on Thursday.
"Everything is ready for the broad use of the digital ruble," Nabiullina said at the Bank of Russia's Financial Congress in St. Petersburg. "Systemically important banks and major retail enterprises are required to connect to the platform."
Extensive preparations had been carried out ahead of the rollout, and the project would continue to develop, she added.
"We aim to make the digital ruble popular and convenient for both individuals and businesses," she said, noting that the central bank is in constant discussions with commercial banks on expanding and improving the platform's functions.
The digital ruble is a new form of Russia's national currency, complementing existing cash and non-cash forms rather than replacing them, according to the central bank. Enditem
