PHNOM PENH, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia logged 28 landmine and explosive remnants of war (ERW) casualties in the first half of 2026, an increase of 16.6 percent compared to the 24 victims during the same period last year, a spokesperson said Friday.
"Seven people were killed, 15 injured, and six suffered amputations due to landmine and ERW explosions from January to June this year," Lang Kosal, a spokesperson for the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), told Xinhua.
According to the spokesperson, landmine and ERW explosions claimed 19,852 lives and injured or amputated 45,301 others between 1979 and June 2026.
Cambodia remains one of the world's most severely affected countries by landmines and ERWs. An estimated four to six million landmines and other munitions were left behind from three decades of armed conflict that ended in 1998.
The Southeast Asian country is committed to clearing all landmines and ERWs by 2030. Enditem
