GENEVA, July 6 (Xinhua) -- From July 3 to 6, the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) held an urgent debate on the human rights situation in and around El-Obeid, North Kordofan, Sudan. Li Xiaomei, deputy head of the Chinese delegation to the UN in Geneva, attended the meeting and elaborated on China's position.
Li said that the humanitarian situation in and around El-Obeid has drawn widespread concern. The large-scale atrocities that occurred in El-Fasher must never be repeated, and the basic human rights of the Sudanese people, including their right to life, must be effectively guaranteed.
The international community should work together to address the humanitarian crisis and alleviate the hardships faced by the people, Li added.
Li emphasized that discussions at the UNHRC should strictly adhere to its mandate and fully respect Sudan's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
The UNHRC should listen to and respect the views of the people of the country concerned, and work to facilitate a lasting solution through dialogue and negotiation, Li added. Enditem
