SYDNEY, July 9 (Xinhua) -- A teenage boy has been charged with murder over a fatal stabbing north of Sydney in the east Australian state of New South Wales (NSW).

The NSW Police Force said in a statement on Thursday that emergency services were called to reports of a stabbing at a home in the town of Taree, 250 km northeast of Sydney, in the early hours of Monday.

Police officers arrived at the scene and found a 36-year-old man with critical injuries. He was treated by officers and ambulance paramedics, but died at the scene.

Investigators established crime scenes and commenced forensic examinations.

Following inquiries, police said a 16-year-old boy was arrested in Taree on Wednesday and subsequently charged with murder.

The local police district commander, Superintendent Grant Erickson, told reporters on Monday that the victim was not previously known to police and that it was unclear if the stabbing was a targeted attack. Enditem
