KABUL, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Construction of two flood protection retaining walls has commenced in Azra district of eastern Afghanistan's Logar province, the provincial government office said on Thursday.

The projects at a cost of 23.5 million Afghanis (about 367,000 U.S. dollars) are scheduled to be completed within six months, the statement said, adding that upon completion, the retaining walls will protect hundreds of acres of farmland, residential houses and public facilities from seasonal flooding.

Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly flash floods triggered by heavy seasonal rains, which frequently cause casualties and inflict extensive damage on agricultural land, homes and public infrastructure across the country. Enditem
