MANILA, July 14 (Xinhua) -- A Grade 4 student in the Philippines died after a routine school deworming activity in Cavite province, southwest of Manila, with initial medical findings linking the death to septic shock caused by an infection, according to the Department of Education on Monday.

The department said the deworming activity was conducted on July 2 at a public elementary school in coordination with the local health office. Several students reportedly fell ill afterward, and the student who died on July 3 had been hospitalized after experiencing vomiting.

The department said health authorities are investigating the incident and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the student's death. According to the department's implementation booklet, these deworming activities are held twice a year to rid students of intestinal parasites that cause nutritional deficiencies. Enditem
