Madagascar and Comoros restore direct air links after four-year hiatus

ANTANANARIVO, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Madagascar and the Comoros officially restored direct air links on Thursday after a four-year suspension, marking a new step in strengthening bilateral cooperation.

According to a statement issued by Madagascar Airlines, the inaugural flight of the restored air service was operated by an ATR 72 aircraft on the Antananarivo-Mahajanga-Moroni route. The service will operate twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays, providing a new air travel option between Madagascar and the Comoros.

The reopening of the route is expected to facilitate passenger mobility while boosting bilateral economic, commercial and tourism exchanges, the company added.

Direct flights between Madagascar and the Comoros were suspended in July 2022, with Madagascar citing public health concerns.

The decision to resume direct flights was finalized following the official visit of Comorian President Azali Assoumani to Madagascar in June for the celebration of the 66th anniversary of Madagascar's independence. Enditem
