TEHRAN, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Eighteen people were wounded in an explosion and the subsequent fire at an industrial park near Iran's capital Tehran on Tuesday, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

The incident, which occurred at Shamsabad industrial park in Ray Country south of Tehran, was reported at 12:56 p.m. local time (0926 GMT), following which seven ambulances and one ambulance bus were immediately sent to the scene, Tasnim quoted Shervin Tabrizi, spokesman for Tehran's emergency medical services, as saying.

He added that four of those injured were transferred to nearby medical centers, and the rest received medical care at the scene, noting that the blast wave destroyed a nearby emergency medical services station.

In an address to reporters, Ray County Governor Bijan Soleimanpour dismissed rumors that the explosion was caused by a projectile strike or external factors, saying it occurred at a tank containing industrial materials at a production unit, according to Tasnim.

He added that the fire has been contained, and the exact cause is under investigation.

Davoud Vali, a board member of the industrial park, said the explosion occurred when a fuel storage tank caught fire at one of the industrial units. Enditem
