BEIRUT, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon's parliament on Wednesday approved a general amnesty law expected to grant relief to thousands of prisoners and wanted persons, according to local news outlet Akhbar al-Yawm.

The law includes amendments reducing the required prison term for release from 14 to 12 years and changes provisions related to private rights and trials outside prison.

Parliament member Imad al-Hout was quoted as saying that 79 of the 146 Islamist detainees would be released under the law, stressing that detainees should not be held beyond the legally prescribed period for pretrial detention.

The parliament's approval came a day after it abolished the death penalty, replacing existing death sentences with life imprisonment. Enditem
