Indonesia's S. Sumatra forest, land fires surge to 1,926 hectares by July

JAKARTA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Forest and land fires in South Sumatra, Indonesia, reached 1,926.2 hectares between January and July 2026, marking a sharp rise of 1,261.4 hectares compared to 664.8 hectares recorded in June, a local official said Friday.

Of the total burned area, 1,857.7 hectares occurred on mineral land and 68.5 hectares on peatland, said Ferdian Krisnanto, head of the Sumatra forest and land fire control center under the Ministry of Forestry.

The data was based on satellite imagery analysis conducted jointly by the Ministry of Forestry and the National Research and Innovation Agency. Enditem
