KAMPALA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Embassy in Uganda has held a send-off reception for 31 Ugandan students who will pursue studies in various disciplines under Chinese government scholarships.
Speaking at the event on Thursday, Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Wu Guangrong said the scholarships help deepen people-to-people ties between China and Uganda.
"Infrastructure can connect cities, trade can connect markets, diplomacy can connect governments, and education can connect people. It is people who ultimately determine the future of relations between countries," Wu said.
"This is why I attach great importance to young friends standing here today. You are not only students, but also potential bridges and new bonds between our two countries," the envoy added.
He encouraged the students to experience China's rapid transformation and apply the knowledge and skills they acquire in China when they return home.
Doreen Akunda, president of the China Alumni Association in Uganda, urged the scholarship recipients to focus on their studies while respecting Chinese laws, customs and culture.
Akunda hailed China for continuing to offer scholarships to Ugandan students, saying the initiative is a sign of deepening bilateral ties at both the government-to-government and people-to-people levels.
Tabu Butagira, a Ugandan student pursuing PhD studies in China, shared his experience of adapting to life there. He urged the scholarship recipients to take note of cultural differences and engage with local communities.
Joshua Ampumuza, who spoke on behalf of the scholarship recipients, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to study in China, saying that "We must return with knowledge, skills, and partnerships that can contribute to Uganda's development." Enditem
