TRIPOLI, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Libya's Presidential Council Chairman Mohamed al-Menfi has referred United Nations reports on oil smuggling and illegal exports to the country's Prosecutor General Al-Siddiq Al-Sour for investigation, according to an official statement released Sunday.
The reports, issued by the UN Security Council's Panel of Experts, allege illegal exports of crude oil and petroleum products, fuel smuggling and the diversion of fuel from designated channels. They also contain information on entities and networks allegedly benefiting from proceeds generated by such activities.
Al-Menfi called for a comprehensive and independent judicial investigation, particularly into Arkenu Chemicals Company and related entities and individuals for possible criminal offenses.
The referral also demands probes into the contracts and arrangements cited in the reports, including the quantities of oil involved, revenues generated and beneficiaries, and whether such revenues entered the state's official financial channels.
The Presidential Council further requested tracing related funds and assets inside and outside Libya and activating international judicial cooperation mechanisms.
It also stressed the need to safeguard evidence and protect witnesses, experts and whistleblowers involved in the investigations. Enditem
