LIMA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Peruvian government on Tuesday declared a 60-day state of emergency in 893 districts across 23 regions due to the imminent risk posed by heavy rains associated with the 2026-2027 El Nino phenomenon.
The measure was made official through a supreme decree, published in the official gazette El Peruano, to prevent and reduce the "very high risk" of extreme rainfall over the coming months.
Regional governments will carry out intervention plans under the technical coordination and monitoring of the National Institute of Civil Defense, with support from relevant ministries and public and private institutions.
The decree said the measures must be directly linked to the climate threat and may be adjusted during implementation according to safety needs and technical reports.
The government said the decision was based on situation reports warning that regional governments' response capacity had been exceeded, making national-level operational and technical assistance necessary. Enditem
