Two artworks remain missing after burglary at France's Renoir Museum

PARIS, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Two artworks remained missing after four paintings were stolen early Tuesday from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer in southeastern France's Alpes-Maritimes department, French media reported.

Cagnes-sur-Mer Mayor Bryan Masson said in a post on Facebook that two individuals entered the Renoir Museum and stole four artworks, triggering the museum's alarm at 5:48 a.m. (0348 GMT).

The two burglars fled before police arrived at the scene, abandoning two of the four stolen paintings in the museum's garden, Franceinfo reported, citing local police.

The city government said two artworks were being actively sought, while the total value of the four initially stolen paintings was estimated at 9 million euros (10.44 million U.S. dollars), Franceinfo reported.

Created in 1960, the museum is housed in the final home and estate of famous French Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

The museum holds a collection including about a dozen original paintings by Renoir, as well as his furniture, personal belongings, photographs and archives. Enditem
