The main dragon-themed exhibition, entitled "Auspicious Dragon: Celebrate the Spring Festival in Museum," was held in basement one. There were also three further exhibitions, entitled "The Celadon Exhibition of Longquan Kiln," "Retrospect Ming Dynasty – Experiencing the Period of Wanli," and the "Green Beijing Photo Exhibition."
The exhibitions are certainly special, but this is not a new event for the museum. "We began our ‘Celebrating Spring Festival in Museum' activities in 2008, the Spring Festival of the Year of the Rat, explained Li Mei, vice director of the museum's Exhibition Department. "This is the fifth year that we have held such activities, and [over time] an increasing number of visitors have learned about the exhibition and gotten involved."
Perhaps aware of the potentially frenzied nature of some Spring Festival activities, Mr Li assured visitors that the museum would retain its traditional peaceful atmosphere, thanks to some careful pre-planning. "All of our exhibitions and activities are free for visitors, but [we have seen that] visitors are well-ordered, thanks to our reservation solution," he said. "Visitors have to make a reservation by phone or online and can visit our exhibitions for free on presentation of their reservation number and ID card."
The museum will also hold activities showcasing traditional methods of celebrating the Spring Festival holiday. More than 30 calligraphers from the Chinese Calligraphers Association got proceedings underway on January 18 by writing Spring Festival couplets for delighted visitors. Peking opera and purple clay art will also be on show during the holiday period. After the show, visitors who are interested in the purple clay art can try their hand at making a pot or cup under the watchful eye and patient instruction of the artists.
For children, the museum has scheduled a series of lectures on Spring Festival traditions. Subjects include Spring Festival painting, dragons, and instruction on how to make kites and lanterns.
All exhibitions will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the holiday period. The museum will be closed on January 22.
