Editor's note:
"2012" has become synonymous with the word 'apocalypse' ever since the film "2012" was released around the world. People have been paying more attention to natural disasters as the so-called doomsday is said to be upon us. The doomsday rumor has absolutely no well-founded credibility to it whatsoever, but more extreme weather and climate events have taken place in recent years, mainly due to human activities. Consequently, we are urged to take action in order to protect our homeland—the Earth. Hurricane Sandy batters Eastern US

Hurricane Sandy was a late-season tropical cyclone and the largest Atlantic hurricane-in terms of diameter-recorded to date. In late October, Hurricane Sandy battered Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, the Bahamas and Haiti, causing massive damage, huge economic losses as well as the unfortunate loss of many lives.

Hurricane Sandy landed on the New Jersey shore on October 30, 2012, bringing with it record winds, torrential rains and floods. Over eight million people suffered from power cuts across the eastern U.S. until October 31, and more than 18 thousand flights were canceled due to the dreadful weather conditions. New York’s public transportation system was shut down for days. Even headquarters of the United Nations and Wall Street both closed their doors.

An economic analyst said the economic losses in America caused by Hurricane Sandy would amount to 50 billion US dollars, making it one of the overall most devastating hurricanes in the history of the United States.
