Is an employment contract from a business the simplest way for a foreigner with a Chinese spouse to obtain permission for long-term residence in China?
Adjust font size:

Dear editor,

I've been married to a Chinese woman since last December. I plan on remaining here and making China my permanent home. Do I need to obtain an employment contract from my company in order for me to stay for the next five years? Or is there a simpler way for me to stay in China?

Russ

Dear Russ,

The best way to live in China permanently is to apply for a permanent residence certificate. There are several ways to apply for the certificate, and the most suitable one for your case seems to be a Permanent Residence Certificate for Reunion of Husband and Wife.

Requirements for Application:

Aliens who meet the following requirements may apply for the Permanent Residence Certificate for Reunion of Husband and Wife:

(1) Married to a Chinese citizen (with permanent household register in China) or with an alien who has obtained the permanent household register in China;

(2) Married for at least five years;

(3) Have lived in China for five continuous years and resided in China for no less than nine months every year;

(4) With stable, ensured living and residence.

We wish you all the best!
