The character Pigsy in the upcoming TV drama remake of "Journey to the West" has garnered much public attention for director Zhang Jizhong's latest version of the classic tale.

Pigsy, or Zhu Bajie, is the second disciple of Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang. Recently released still photos that provide close-ups of this protagonist reveal a very stereotypically curious, greedy and cunning Pigsy that viewers will immediately find familiar.

"Journey to the West" is based on same-titled mythical Chinese classic. Many films and TV series based on the literary work have been produced in the past decades, among which the 1982 classic TV series was the most successful. Its 2000 sequel, however, was controversial.

As remakes usually prove to be less popular with audiences than original versions, many are wondering if Zhang has any aces up his sleeve to outdo the others with his new big budget project.

At present, it seems he has already started to astonish the public with his portrayal of Pigsy and his creative costume designs for his production of the classic.
