Members of the Chinese pop group Superband announced on Wednesday that they are breaking up in two months.
Jonathan Lee, Lo Ta-Yu, Wakin Chau and Chang Chen-Yue were already well-known before they came together as Superband last year.
But they announced on Wednesday that the band's upcoming Beijing gigs, scheduled for November 20 and 21 at the Capital Indoor Stadium, will be its final shows.
"But don't call it a breakup," Lo Ta-Yu told reporters as the band members promoted the final gigs at a light-hearted media conference inside Beijing's Olympic Green. "We made the decision the moment we started the band."
"We don't like sad words such as 'dissolve'," continued Lo Ta-Yu. "We agreed in the first place that our cooperation would only last for a year. Now, the mission has completed!"
Regarding their post-Superband plans, Jonathan Lee said he would spend more time in his guitar-making workshop. Lo Ta-Yu plans to focus on creating musicals. Wakin Chau will work on solo albums, while Chang Chen-Yue may take more time off to enjoy life.
The formation of Superband in July 2008 came as a surprise because each of the musicians is a heavyweight in the mandopop scene.
Jonathan Lee, 51, is among the best-known Chinese singer-songwriters. He is also a music producer. Lo Ta-Yu, 55, spearheaded Chinese pop and rock music in the 1980s. Wakin Chau, 48, has a solid fan base and has released more than 40 albums. Chang Chen-Yue, the youngest band member, is a talented rock singer-songwriter and guitarist.
