'Avatar' shatters S Korean box office over weekend

The Hollywood tent-pole "Avatar," directed by James Cameron of "Titanic," has broken the South Korean box office over the weekend, becoming the most-watched foreign movies of all time, according to the estimation by the state-run film agency on Monday.

The 3-D epic attracted more than 830,000 audiences nationwide over the weekend, breaking the record for the most-watched foreign movie with the combined number of audience totaling more than 8 million, according to data provided by the Korean Film Council.

The previous record was held by the American science fiction movie "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," which drew 7.44 million moviegoers.

Following the special effects-laden blockbuster, South Korean-made "Jeon Woo Chi: The Taoist Wizard," directed by Choi Dong-hoon, came in second during the weekend, according to the estimation.
