With 10 nominees in this category and the new preferential voting system, The Hurt Locker's momentum is hard to overcome despite the recent disclosure that one of the producer's sent e-mails out asking academy members to vote for the film.
While Avatar is the blockbuster and is impressive technically, Basterds has received more praise from critics.
