The U.S. State Department opened its doors on Wednesday, welcoming Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon to speak at its gilded hall, in an effort to combat violence against women.

The actress, known for her role in the popular movie "Legally Blond," spoke at a State Department breakfast meeting, saying a " common thread" binds all the people around the globe, as everyone desires to live in a safe and peaceful environment, to make something of themselves and to pass on a better future for the next generation.

"The most important thing you can do in a child's life is help the mother," Witherspoon said, noting everyone has the potential to help make a world free of violence against women.

The meeting is the official launch of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women, an initiative of Avon Foundation for Women in collaboration with the State Department to combat the most destructive types of violence against women, and help ensure justice for women and girls worldwide.
