Cast member Ge You said he had never seen so many spectators at a movie's launch ceremony before.
The movie also features A-listing actress Fan Bingbing, TV heartthrob Huang Xiaoming, veteran actor Wang Xueqi and Zhang Fengyi who starred in Chen Kaige's 1993 Oscar-nominated film "Farewell, My Concubine."
Originally an ancient Chinese play, "Zhao's Orphan" has seen many stage incarnations in Chinese opera houses. It tells the story of a rural doctor saving the newborn son of the chancellor of the Jin Kingdom whose family is executed because of political slander. The doctor decides to raise the boy so he can avenge his family.
A 25-acre ancient city will be built for the filming in east China's Zhejiang Province, according to earlier reports.
