Tim Burton's latest film "Alice in Wonderland" has proved to be another Hollywood box-office sensation coming hot on the heels of the sci-fi, 3-D blockbuster "Avatar".

According to Shanghai United Cinema Lines, the city's major cinema chain, the Disney film has made more than 6 million yuan (US$878,748) at the box office since its Chinese release last Friday, three weeks after its United States and Canada opening. Globally the film has grossed about US$600 million.

"Among the 10 or so films now showing, the film accounted for 74 percent of our total box office revenue over the weekend," said Wu Hehu, the chain's deputy general manager.

Though Wu said the film wouldn't surpass the 190 million yuan box office record set by "Avatar" at the chain (1.3 billion yuan domestically), it would be another popular production among Chinese film fans.

"'Alice' will further increase interest in 3-D films," he added. "China now has more than 1,000 3-D screens. The number is increasing as 3-D films grab more attention."

Yonghua Cinema has sold about 600,000 yuan in tickets for "Alice".

Li Lan, a manager at the cinema, said the film's fabulous scenes and A-list cast are attracting movie-goers.

"But due to the director Burton's playfully grotesque visual sense and strong personal style, the film has not been received as well as 'Avatar' by Chinese of different generations," Li said.

"Alice" stars Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp and tells the story of 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the magical world from her childhood, as she reunites with old friends and ends the Red Queen's reign of terror.
