East Wind, Rain, an espionage film set against a backdrop of World War II, is highly recommended for its faithfulness to history.

Telling a story about cryptographers and spies working for different countries in 1940s Japanese-occupied Shanghai, the film reveals historic scenes ranging from nightclubs to the refuge of Jews in the old metropolis.

It also reproduces scenes on how spies exchanged their messages at the special times. Spies communicate in front of the notice board, hiding messages with iodine and in Bibles or encoding them by playing pianos.

Xu Yan, a historical consultant for the film, said the producers did a lot of research on the history of old Shanghai.

East Wind, Rain was directed by Liu Yunlong, an espionage film and suspense drama enthusiast, and opened in China on April 21.
