Fashion designer Guo Pei gave a show at 798 D-Park, Beijing's design zone on Monday night, showcasing more than 30 costumes she created for the Kunqu Opera Two Belles in Love, which will premiere at Poly Theater from May 11 to 14.

Members of the cast and models showcased the gorgeous traditional style silk dresses featuring vivid embroidery and contemporary twists.

"All my creations and effort are in order to revive the old art form which embodies history and tells a pure love story," said the 39-year-old designer.

To augment the air of tradition, Cheng Lin, also in a dress by Guo, played erhu at the show.

Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan adapted the Kunqu Opera from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) playwright Li Yu's novel which tells the story of two beauties besotted with each other's beauty and talent, and who scheme to be together by marrying the same man.

After the premiere in Beijing, the show will tour Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Wuhan and return to Beijing's Imperial Granary as a resident show.
