Battle of Stalingrad to be filmed in 3-D

American film director James Cameron may envy his Russian counterpart soon, if the latter succeeds in his new grand undertaking announced on Monday.
Renowned Moscow film director and movie actor Fyodor Bondarchuk announced his intention to shoot a movie, the production of which would be challenging in both creative and technical terms.
The 43-year-old filmmaker plans to produce an epic blockbuster about the Battle of Stalingrad in 3-D mode, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.
Fyodor Bondarchuk's production studio Art Pictures has recently started the consultations with the leading U.S. expert in the 3-D technology, Vince Pace, who assisted James Cameron in making his famous saga "Avatar", the film director said.
The screenplay of "Stalingrad" was being written for two years and it is "nearly ready" now, Bondarchuk said.
He estimated that the production of the film would cost him about 30 million U.S. dollars. Up to the date, the director admitted, he was able to collect only one third of the money required.
The cast selection for the production has been currently underway, Bondarchuk said.
"It's a lot of hard work," he noted.
The shooting itself will be made in the city of Volgograd (former Stalingrad), and the movie should come out in 2012-2013, the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad.
Besides making his movie, the Russian film director currently participates in the Cinema City project that supports the 3-D refurbishment of over 250 movie theaters across Russia by 2015.
