Chinese rock veteran Cui Jian on Saturday night led a line-up of musicians in an outdoor concert in Shanghai to mark the World Environment Day.

The show, entitled "Green Now", attracted more than 10,000 visitors inside the World Expo park, the Shanghai Morning Post reports.

Cui, who is an ambassador for the annual Earth Hour campaign, requested the lights be turned off while he performed.

"Turning off the lights is just a gesture. The concert can't go without electricity. But still, by doing so I want to draw more attention to our worsening environment," Cui told Shanghai Morning Post.

Other performers during the night included Deserts Chang, Cao Fang, Yu Quan, and New Pants.

The event was co-organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and China Radio International. The WWF had purchased a carbon offset for the concert.
