Tan will score the music for Jia's first period drama, which will begin filming in October. Almost all of Jia's previous works have been about small town youngsters' dreams and pains in modern times.

Tan and Jia announced their cooperation while promoting a shaving brand in Shanghai on June 20. Jia also said his documentary I Wish I Knew would premiere on July 2, squashing rumors that the film has been banned for its sharp dialogue.

It follows Shanghai's history by interviewing 18 locals including painter Chen Danqing and writer Han Han.

Tan speaks highly of the documentary, in which water is an important theme, just like in some of his music.

Tan won best music honor for his original score in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon during the Academy Awards in 2000.
