The classic Chinese stage play "Teahouse" has been adapted into a TV series that will air on China Central Television (CCTV) starting on July 16, the Beijing News reports.

Veteran actor Chen Baoguo plays the lead role of Wang Lifa, whose teahouse witnesses the ups and downs of Beijing during the eventful first half of the 20th century.

Chen, whose notable works include "Moment in Peking" and "Da Zhai Men", said he had waited a long time for this role.

The 39-episode series is based on the monumental play of the same name written by Lao She in 1957.

In 2005, the Beijing People's Art Theater took the story to American audiences with a successful show at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
