The national dance competition, the Seventh Lotus Awards, began its school contests in Qingdao, Shandong province, on July 21. Some 63 works selected from more than 400 pieces will compete for the awards. Among them, 32 are from arts schools while 31 are performed by students from ordinary colleges.

There will also be a seminar on dance education during the week-long event.

For the first time, students from Taiwan will perform at the event, though not in competition.

Organized by Chinese Dancers Association, the Lotus Awards were lunched in 1998 and are held every other year.
