Among the many large-scale clothing design competitions currently abound, the town of Xiliu in southern Liaoning Province is attempting to use this momentum to rebrand itself from a mere manufacturing base to an innovative design center with its own competition, Northern Costume.

“We still have a long way to go from simply copying other styles to designing our own, but we are working hard on it, hoping to make progress day by day,” said Li Qingquan, Xiliu government official and organizer of the competition.

He explained that Xiliu was once among the largest clothing production bases in China, but began to gradually lag behind as other clothing manufacturing centers such as Changshu, Jiangsu province and Yiwu, Zhejiang Province increasingly emphasized fashion design.

“The whole industry in China is competing in innovative design, and the core of competition undoubtedly lies in innovation,” said Qiao.

Northern Costume kicked off in early May, with hundreds of young designers from across the country participating in the event. Heiko M. Buerger, one of the panel judges from France, spoke highly of the contest, saying that he saw new hope for Chinese design in this town.

“It is an epitome of greater China, as the country is working hard transform itself from ‘made to China’ to ‘designed in China’,” Buerger said.

A magnificent fashion show was held Wednesday night, presenting 24 selected designs by young designers participating in the competition.
